Tesla Model X salary sacrifice: how it affects your pay index

Understand how a Tesla Model X salary sacrifice arrangement changes your gross pay relative to the national line, with state and industry differences explained.

The effect of a Tesla Model X salary sacrifice on your pay index is uncertain because it depends on your employer, award coverage, and FBT treatment; no single index figure can be assigned.

What is a Tesla Model X salary sacrifice?

A Tesla Model X salary sacrifice is an arrangement where you agree to forgo part of your pre-tax salary in exchange for your employer providing you with a Tesla Model X (usually through a novated lease). The sacrificed amount is not counted as assessable income for tax purposes, which can lower your income tax bill. However, it also reduces your gross ordinary-time earnings, which is the figure used to calculate your position on the Salary Index.

How salary sacrifice affects the Salary Index

The Salary Index compares your annualised gross ordinary-time earnings to the national line of $108,352 (index 100). When you salary sacrifice, your gross earnings drop by the sacrificed amount. For example, if you earn $120,000 gross and sacrifice $15,000 for a Tesla Model X, your reported gross becomes $105,000. Your index would then be 105,000 ÷ 108,352 × 100 ≈ 96.9, below the national average. Without sacrifice, your index would have been about 110.7.

But the index is only a benchmark. The real benefit of salary sacrifice is the tax saving. Under the 2026–27 tax rates, the $15,000 sacrificed would otherwise be taxed at your marginal rate (say 37% plus 2% Medicare levy). By sacrificing, you avoid that tax, though you may still pay fringe benefits tax (FBT) unless the car qualifies for an exemption.

Electric Car Discount and FBT

From 1 July 2025, the Australian Government’s Electric Car Discount exempts eligible electric cars from FBT if they are first made available for use after that date and have a luxury car tax value below the threshold (currently $89,332 for fuel-efficient cars). The Tesla Model X has a starting price above that threshold, so it may not qualify for the full exemption. Check with your employer or a tax professional. If FBT applies, your employer may pass on the cost, reducing your net benefit.

State differences in pay index and salary sacrifice

Your ability to salary sacrifice a Tesla Model X depends partly on your state’s average earnings. Higher-index states give you more room to sacrifice while staying above award or minimum wage. For instance:

  • ACT (index 109.9): Average annualised earnings $119,090. A sacrifice of $15,000 leaves $104,090, still above the national line.
  • WA (index 106.9): Average $115,825. After $15,000 sacrifice, $100,825 – still above the national minimum wage of $52,255 (index 48.2).
  • NSW (index 101.2): Average $109,658. After sacrifice, $94,658 – still well above the minimum.
  • TAS (index 88.6): Average $96,008. After $15,000 sacrifice, $81,008 – still above the minimum but closer to the national line.

If your earnings are already near the state average, a large sacrifice could push your gross below the national median, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do it – it just means your index score will be lower.

Industry differences

Industry pay levels also matter. In high-paying industries, salary sacrifice is more common and easier to accommodate:

  • Mining (index 154.7): Average $167,600. A $15,000 sacrifice still leaves $152,600, well above the national line.
  • Professional, scientific and technical (index 114.7): Average $124,300. After sacrifice, $109,300 – still above the national line.
  • Education and training (index 105.5): Average $114,300. After sacrifice, $99,300 – slightly below the national line.
  • Health care and social assistance (index 97.8): Average $106,000. After sacrifice, $91,000 – below the national line.
  • Retail trade (index 75.9): Average $82,200. After sacrifice, $67,200 – still above the minimum wage but significantly below the national average.

If you work in a lower-paying industry, salary sacrifice may reduce your gross to a point where you need to ensure you still meet award minimums. The national minimum wage is $26.44 per hour ($1,004.90 per week, annualised $52,255). Even after a $15,000 sacrifice, a retail worker on $82,200 would have $67,200, which is above the minimum. But if your base salary is close to the award floor, sacrificing could push you below it, which is not allowed.

Award and super considerations

Your award may set a minimum hourly rate that you must receive in cash. Salary sacrifice cannot reduce your cash earnings below the award rate. For example, if your award minimum is $25.74 per hour (entry-level floor), your employer must pay you at least that in cash after any sacrifice. The sacrificed amount goes to the lease, not to your pocket.

Superannuation is also affected. The super guarantee (12% from 1 July 2026) is calculated on your ordinary-time earnings, which may be reduced by salary sacrifice. Some employers calculate super on your pre-sacrifice salary; others use the reduced amount. Check your employment contract. The maximum super contribution base is $270,830, so if your pre-sacrifice salary is above that, the sacrifice won’t affect your super cap.

How to think about your index after salary sacrifice

If you are considering a Tesla Model X salary sacrifice, you can estimate your new index by taking your annualised gross salary, subtracting the sacrificed amount, dividing by $108,352, and multiplying by 100. For example:

  • Gross salary: $130,000
  • Sacrifice: $20,000
  • New gross: $110,000
  • Index: 110,000 ÷ 108,352 × 100 ≈ 101.5

This is slightly above the national line. Without sacrifice, your index would have been 120.0. The trade-off is lower tax and potentially a new car.

Final note

There is no single “Tesla Model X salary sacrifice” index figure because every arrangement differs. Your employer, your award, your state, and your industry all play a role. Use the national line and your own numbers to see where you stand. Always consult a tax adviser or your employer’s HR department before entering a salary sacrifice agreement.

Questions people ask

Does salary sacrificing a Tesla Model X lower my Salary Index score?

Yes, because the Salary Index is based on gross ordinary-time earnings before salary sacrifice. When you salary sacrifice part of your pre-tax pay for a Tesla Model X, your reported gross earnings drop, so your index score (your annualised gross divided by the national line of $108,352, times 100) will be lower than if you had not sacrificed. However, the benefit is that you pay less income tax on the sacrificed amount, and if the car is eligible for the Electric Car Discount (exempt from FBT), you may also save on fringe benefits tax.

Which states have the highest pay index for someone considering a Tesla Model X salary sacrifice?

Based on the national line of 100, the ACT has the highest state index at 109.9 (annualised $119,090), followed by WA at 106.9 ($115,825) and NSW at 101.2 ($109,658). A higher underlying pay index means more room to sacrifice without falling below award or minimum wage requirements. However, the actual benefit of salary sacrifice also depends on your employer’s policy and whether they offer novated leasing.

How do industry pay differences affect a Tesla Model X salary sacrifice?

Industries with higher pay indexes, such as Mining (154.7) and Professional, scientific and technical (114.7), give employees more headroom to sacrifice a portion of their salary for a Tesla Model X while still staying above award rates. In contrast, industries like Retail trade (75.9) or Accommodation and food services (72.5) have lower average pay, so salary sacrifice may reduce gross earnings closer to the minimum, potentially affecting compliance with award or super guarantee requirements.
