Salary Package Calculator: What It Shows About Your Gross Pay, Super, and Tax

Learn how a salary package calculator works for Australian workers. Understand gross pay, super, and tax, and see where your pay sits on the salary index.

A salary package calculator shows total remuneration including base salary and super, but the salary index compares only gross ordinary-time earnings.

What a salary package calculator shows

A salary package calculator is a practical tool for Australian workers and employers. It takes your gross annual salary – the amount you earn before tax and super – and adds the super guarantee contribution to show your total remuneration. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary-time earnings, up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830. So if your base salary is $100,000, your total package is $112,000. The calculator may also include other benefits like a car, phone, or bonuses, but the core is base plus super.

How the salary index relates to your package

The Salary Index uses gross ordinary-time earnings, not total package. The national line is $108,352 per year (index 100). That figure comes from the Australian Bureau of Statistics Average Weekly Earnings for May 2026. To find your index, divide your gross annual salary by $108,352 and multiply by 100. For example, a gross salary of $90,000 gives an index of 83.1. Your total package of $100,800 (with 12% super) is higher, but the index comparison stays with the base. This distinction matters when you see industry or state benchmarks. The industries page shows that mining workers have a high index of 154.7, while retail trade sits at 75.9. Those figures are gross pay only.

Using the calculator for award and minimum wage checks

A salary package calculator can help you check if your base pay meets legal minimums. The national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, $1,004.90 per week, or $52,255 per year (index 48.2). Modern awards often set higher rates. For example, the award floor for many entry-level roles is $25.74 per hour, but most awards pay more. The calculator should let you enter your hourly or annual base rate. Remember: super cannot be used to satisfy the minimum wage or award rate. Your base salary must stand alone. Casual employees get a loading – the casual rate example is $33.05 per hour, which is 25% above the minimum. Junior rates apply for workers under 21; the National Minimum Wage Order sets percentages. For a 16-year-old, the hourly rate is $12.51 (47.3% of adult minimum). A good calculator will account for these variations.

Tax and take-home pay in the calculator

Many salary package calculators also estimate tax and take-home pay. For 2026–27, resident tax rates are: nil on the first $18,200, 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000, 30% from $45,001 to $135,000, 37% from $135,001 to $190,000, and 45% above $190,000. Plus a 2% Medicare levy on all taxable income. For a gross salary of $100,000, tax is roughly $22,967 (including Medicare), leaving about $77,033 take-home. Super is not included in take-home because it goes into your super fund. The calculator may also show the effect of salary sacrifice or HELP debts, but the standard estimate ignores those. Always check the assumptions. The how the index works page explains that index figures are gross benchmarks, not a quote for your personal situation.

State and industry variations

Your location and industry affect typical pay. The states page shows indices: ACT 109.9 ($119,090), WA 106.9 ($115,825), NSW 101.2 ($109,658), VIC 98.0 ($106,137), QLD 97.9 ($106,064), SA 94.6 ($102,450), NT 95.2 ($103,173), TAS 88.6 ($96,008). If you work in mining, the industry index is 154.7 – well above the national line. In accommodation and food services, it is 72.5. A salary package calculator that lets you select state or industry can give context, but remember the index is for gross ordinary-time earnings, not total package. For example, a retail worker earning $60,000 gross (index 55.4) might have a total package of $67,200 including super, but the industry index of 75.9 suggests the typical retail worker earns more than that. Use the calculator to see where you stand, then compare with pay guides for your award.

Common mistakes when using a salary package calculator

  • Confusing total package with base salary for award compliance. Your base must meet the minimum or award rate; super is extra.
  • Ignoring super guarantee changes. From 1 July 2026 it is 12%. Some calculators may still use 11.5%.
  • Not including casual loading. Casual employees should use the loaded rate, not the base rate.
  • Forgetting junior rates. If you are under 21, use the correct percentage of the adult minimum wage.
  • Overlooking tax offsets or Medicare levy surcharge. The calculator’s tax estimate is a guide only.

A salary package calculator is a useful starting point. It shows your total remuneration and estimated take-home pay. But for a true benchmark, use the Salary Index with your gross salary. Check your award or agreement for minimum entitlements. And remember that the index is a snapshot of ordinary-time earnings, not a promise of what you should earn.

Questions people ask

What is a salary package calculator?

A salary package calculator is a tool that estimates your total remuneration by adding your base salary (gross pay) to the super guarantee contribution (12% from 1 July 2026) and sometimes other benefits like car allowances or bonuses. It may also estimate tax and take-home pay. It helps you see the full cost to an employer and your net income, but remember that the salary index uses only gross ordinary-time earnings for comparison.

Does a salary package calculator include super?

Yes, most salary package calculators include the super guarantee as part of the total package. For example, if your base salary is $80,000, the calculator would add 12% super ($9,600) to show a total package of $89,600. However, for award compliance, your base salary must meet the minimum wage or award rate – super cannot be counted towards that minimum. The salary index also uses base gross pay, not the total package.

How do I use a salary package calculator to compare my pay to the national average?

Enter your gross annual salary (before tax and super) into the calculator. Then compare that figure to the national line of $108,352 (index 100). For instance, a gross salary of $80,000 gives an index of about 73.8, meaning it is roughly 26% below the full-time adult ordinary-time earnings. The calculator can also show how your total package (including super) compares, but the official index uses only gross pay. Use the [Salary Index](/) and [states](/states) pages to see how your location or industry affects the benchmark.
