The national line is $108,352 per year (index 100). Your pay index is your gross annual salary divided by $108,352 times 100.

What Is a Salary Calculator Australia?

A salary calculator Australia is a tool that helps you understand where your pay sits against the national line. It takes your gross annual salary and compares it to the full-time adult ordinary-time earnings benchmark set by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The result is your personal salary index – a number that shows whether you earn above or below the average. You can also use it to estimate your take-home pay after tax and super, and to see how your pay compares across states and industries.

At Salary Index we use the latest ABS data to keep the national line accurate. As of May 2026, the full-time adult ordinary-time earnings are $2,083.70 per week, annualised to $108,352. That figure is our index 100. Every other pay figure is measured against it.

How the Salary Index Works

Your salary index is simple to calculate: divide your gross annual salary by $108,352 and multiply by 100. For example, if you earn $80,000 a year, your index is 73.8. That means you earn about 74% of the national average. If you earn $130,000, your index is 120.0 – 20% above the line.

The index works for any gross pay figure, whether you are full-time, part-time, or casual. For hourly rates, you can annualise them by multiplying by 38 hours per week and 52 weeks. The national minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, which annualises to $52,255 and gives an index of 48.2. Casual workers get a loading of 25%, so the casual minimum is $33.05 per hour.

State and territory indices show how average pay varies around the country. For instance, New South Wales has an index of 101.2 ($109,658 annualised), while Tasmania is 88.6 ($96,008). The Australian Capital Territory is highest at 109.9 ($119,090). You can explore these differences on our states page.

Industry indices also vary a lot. Mining leads at 154.7, while retail trade sits at 75.9 and accommodation and food services at 72.5. Professional, scientific and technical services is 114.7, education and training 105.5, and health care and social assistance 97.8. These are gross ordinary-time benchmarks, not individual job offers. For more detail, see our industries page.

Gross Pay, Super, and Tax

A salary calculator Australia is most useful when it shows what you actually take home. Your gross pay is what your employer pays you before any deductions. On top of that, your employer must pay superannuation – currently 12% from 1 July 2026, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. Super is not part of your take-home pay; it goes into your super fund for retirement.

Then there is tax. For the 2026–27 financial year, resident tax rates are:

  • Nil on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

Plus a Medicare levy of 2% on your taxable income. These rates assume you claim the tax-free threshold and do not have a HELP debt, salary sacrifice, or other adjustments.

Let’s run an example. Say you earn $80,000 gross. Your super is $9,600 (12% of $80,000). Your tax is calculated on $80,000:

  • Nil on $18,200
  • 15% on $26,800 (from $18,201 to $45,000) = $4,020
  • 30% on $35,000 (from $45,001 to $80,000) = $10,500
  • Total income tax = $14,520
  • Medicare levy = 2% of $80,000 = $1,600
  • Total deductions = $16,120
  • Take-home pay = $63,880 per year, or about $1,228 per week.

If you earn $130,000, your index is 120.0. Super is $15,600. Tax is higher: $4,020 on the first bracket, then 30% on $90,000 (from $45,001 to $135,000) = $27,000, total income tax $31,020, plus Medicare $2,600, total $33,620, take-home $96,380.

These are estimates. A proper salary calculator Australia will do these sums for you, including the Medicare levy and the tax-free threshold.

Using the Calculator for Your Situation

Your pay might not be a simple annual salary. If you are part-time, your index is based on your actual gross earnings. If you are casual, remember the 25% loading is part of your gross pay – it is not extra on top of the index. Junior workers have their own minimum hourly rates: for example, a 16-year-old gets $12.51 per hour under the national minimum wage, but a modern award may set a different rate. Awards can also pay more than the minimum, so always check your award or agreement.

The salary calculator Australia is a starting point. It helps you see where you stand relative to the national average, and it gives you a realistic take-home figure. You can use it to compare job offers, negotiate a raise, or understand how moving to a different state or industry might change your pay. For more guidance, see our pay guides and topics pages.

Why the Index Matters

Knowing your salary index is useful for more than curiosity. It gives you a benchmark that is independent of job titles or industries. If your index is below 100, you earn less than the average full-time adult. If it is above, you earn more. You can also compare your index to the state or industry average to see if your pay is competitive.

For example, if you work in retail (industry index 75.9) and your personal index is 70, you are slightly below the industry average. If you work in mining (index 154.7) and your index is 140, you are below the industry average even though you are well above the national line. That context matters when you are thinking about your career.

The index also helps with cost-of-living decisions. Moving from Tasmania (index 88.6) to the ACT (109.9) might mean a higher salary, but housing costs are also higher. The index is a tool, not the whole story.

Final Thoughts

A salary calculator Australia is a practical way to understand your pay in the broader economy. It uses the same national benchmark that employers, unions, and policymakers refer to. By knowing your salary index, you can have more informed conversations about your earnings, super, and tax. Whether you are starting a new job, negotiating a raise, or just curious, the calculator gives you a clear picture of where you stand.

Questions people ask

What is the salary calculator Australia used for?

A salary calculator Australia helps you compare your gross pay to national benchmarks like the full-time adult ordinary-time earnings (index 100). It can also estimate your take-home pay after tax and super, and show how your pay stacks up against state or industry averages.

How do I calculate my salary index?

Divide your gross annual salary by $108,352 (the national line) and multiply by 100. For example, $80,000 ÷ $108,352 × 100 = 73.8. That means your pay is about 74% of the average full-time adult ordinary-time earnings.

Does the salary calculator include super and tax?

Yes, a good salary calculator Australia will show both. Super is 12% of your gross salary (from July 2026) and is paid on top by your employer. Tax is deducted from your gross pay using the 2026–27 resident rates plus the 2% Medicare levy. The calculator gives an estimate of your take-home pay.
