What is the average NRL player salary in 2026?

NRL player salaries are set by a collective bargaining agreement, not an award. The average NRL player salary is several times the national line, with a minimum of $130,000 and top

The typical NRL player earns around $500,000 a year, placing them at an index of about 460, far above the national line of 100.

What is an NRL player salary?

An NRL player salary is not set by a modern award or the national minimum wage. Instead, it is governed by a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the NRL and the Rugby League Players’ Association (RLPA), covering the 2023–2027 seasons. The CBA sets minimum wages, salary caps, and conditions for all NRL and NRLW players.

For the men’s competition, each club has a Top 30 salary cap – the total amount it can spend on its 30 highest-paid players. In 2026, the base salary cap is $11.55 million, plus a Veteran and Developed Player allowance of $300,000 and a motor vehicle allowance of $100,000, bringing the total to $11.95 million per club.

The CBA also guarantees a minimum player wage: $130,000 in 2024, rising to $150,000 by 2027. This is far above the national minimum wage of $52,255 (index 48.2) and even above the national full-time adult ordinary-time earnings of $108,352 (index 100).

How does an NRL player salary compare to the national line?

The Salary Index sets 100 as the national full-time adult ordinary-time earnings, based on ABS Average Weekly Earnings of $2,083.70 per week ($108,352 annualised). An NRL player on the minimum wage of $130,000 has an index of 120 – already above the national average. But most NRL players earn much more.

Total player payments across all clubs for the 2023–2027 period amount to $1.347 billion, or about $269.4 million per year. With 17 clubs each fielding 30 top-30 players (510 players), the average annual salary works out to roughly $528,000. That gives an index of about 487 – nearly five times the national line.

Of course, not every player earns the average. Marquee players can command $1 million or more, especially when third-party agreements (TPAs) are included. TPAs are payments from sponsors not associated with the club, and there is no cap on how much a player can earn from them.

Reading a job ad: what to look for

If you see an NRL player job ad (rare, as most recruitment is through club pathways), the advertised figure is likely the base contract fee. But remember:

  • Match fees and bonuses are added to the salary cap value based on prior-year performance. For example, a $3,000 per game bonus for a player who played 10 games adds $30,000 to their cap value.
  • Allowances for motor vehicles (up to five per club, valued at $20,000 each) and veteran/developed player status are outside the cap.
  • Third-party agreements can significantly boost total earnings. These must be approved but are not limited in amount.
  • Superannuation is paid on top at 12% from 1 July 2026, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830.

When comparing an NRL player salary to other jobs, use the Salary Index. A base contract of $130,000 (index 120) is already strong, but a typical player on $500,000 (index 461) is in a completely different league.

State and industry context

NRL clubs are based in several states, and the states page shows how average earnings vary. For example, New South Wales has an index of 101.2, Queensland 97.9, and Victoria 98.0. An NRL player’s salary far exceeds these state benchmarks regardless of where they play.

Compared to other industries, NRL players earn well above the professional, scientific and technical services index of 114.7, and far above retail trade (75.9) or accommodation and food services (72.5). Only mining (index 154.7) comes close, but even the average miner earns less than the minimum NRL wage.

The bottom line

An NRL player salary is not an award wage – it’s a professional sports contract under a CBA. The minimum is $130,000, the average is around $500,000, and top stars earn millions. When you see a figure in a job ad or contract, remember to factor in bonuses, allowances, and third-party deals. Use the Salary Index to see how any offer stacks up against the national line.

Questions people ask

What is the minimum wage for an NRL player?

The minimum NRL player wage is set by the CBA. In 2024 it is $130,000 per year, rising to $150,000 by 2027. This is well above the national minimum wage of $52,255 (index 48.2).

How does the NRL salary cap affect player pay?

Each club has a Top 30 salary cap – $11.95 million in 2026 – which limits total spending on the 30 highest-paid players. Clubs must spend at least 97.5% of the cap. This ensures competitive balance and prevents wealthy clubs from hoarding talent.

Can NRL players earn money outside their club contract?

Yes. Players can earn unlimited amounts from third-party sponsors not associated with their club, as long as agreements are approved by the club and NRL. Payments from representative games, prize money, and education fees are also excluded from the salary cap.
